IU (hangul: 아이유), also known by her real name Lee Jieun (hangul: 이지은, hanja:李知恩) is a South Korean female solo singer and actress. IU was born on May 16 1993 and debuted under a South Korean entertainment, LOEN Ent. She debuted in the year of 2008 under the stage name "IU" which has the meaning, I and U become one through music. IU started her very first promotion with a mini album, Lost and Found and "Missing Child" or well-known as "Mia" as the main track. However, this is not a very good start for IU.
In 2009, IU released her first album, "Growing Up" with "Boo" as the lead track and topped in various music charts. She also started to sing for a drama's OST (original soundtrack) and featured in other artists' albums such as, MC Mong and Mighty Mouth.
In 2010, IU recorded a duet song with 2AM's Seulong, "Nagging" for a MBC TV Show, "We Got Married" and started to collect her first awards from music shows. Soon after, she was chosen to sing for some Korean Drama' OST and collaborated to sing with top artists such as Sung Shi Kyung (It's You), Yoo Seungho (I Believe in Love) and Big Bang's Seungri (I Know). In the late 2010, IU worked with some popular musicians and producers to make her third mini album, "REAL" with an amazing hit, "Good Day". "Good Day" shows her special abillity to sing the 3 level high notes which makes the Nation's Little Sister shines even brighter. "Real +" was released following the success of "REAL" with a ballad song as the lead track, "The Story Only I Didn't Know".
In 2011 was the birth of actress IU. She started her debut as an actress in a KBS drama, "Dream High" which was a very popular TV drama and aired not only in Korea but in many countries. IU got a role as, Kim Pilsook, who was a shy girl trying to pursue her dream as a singer. She acted in the drama with popular singers from various boy/girl groups, Suzy (Miss A), Taecyeon (2PM), Eunjung (T-ARA), Wooyoung (2PM) and a rookie actor, Kim Soohyun. On June 18, 2011, IU held her first official fanmeeting and mini-concert at AX-Korea. It also marked the 1004th day since she debute In the late 2011, IU released her second album, "Last Fantasy" and achieved an all kill in korea's music charts as all 13 songs immediately swept most of all the charts .
On January 24 2012, IU began her first debut in Japan by holding a special showcase in Tokyo's Bunkamura Orchard Hall. She released her Japan Debut Album, "Good Day" japanese album which has the DVD footage from her japanese showcase. IU is now holding a "Friendship Showcase" in Japan's cities, started in Tokyo, Nagoya, Osaka, Fukuoka, etc. She is also holding her first nationwide concert, "Real Fantasy" which will be starting in June.
IU is just releasing her third self-composed song (after Hold My Hand and A Stray Puppy), "Peach" which is in her latest digital single album, "Spring of A Twenty Year Old" ("수무살의 봄") that officially released on May 11 2012.
A 26-minute-long documentary-style music video film was released alongside the album, featuring the album track, "Every End of the Day", and several interviews with IU that showcase her personal thoughts and experiences. This film contains footage of IU as she visits Venice, Italy.[21] Due to her commitments towards preparing for her first solo tour, she was unable to make broadcast promotions for the single. Additionally, while touring, she had to leave her hosting job at SBS' Inkigayo, though she returned upon the tour's completion. You & I, IU's second Japanese single, was released on July 18th.
In December, IU's entertainment company, LOEN Entertainment, announced that IU will be having a comeback in 2013. The album, which is expected to have a mature theme in opposition to the "Nation's Little Sister" image that IU has presented on her previous work, will be released in March or April.
On January 24 2013, IU was confirmed as one of the leading roles for new KBS2TV weekend drama as Lee Soon Shin, a seemingly unlucky girl who remains courageous and bright. Filming for the drama began in February and premiered on March 9 2013.
